MARQUETTE — Since 1961, 12 people have drowned in Lake Superior near Picnic Rocks in Marquette and 17 people have drowned in the water around Presque Isle.

On Wednesday, Marquette area residents gathered at city hall to discuss ways to try to prevent further drownings. Ideas brought up included signs, rescue stations, buoys, additional lifeguards and dumping rocks between the shore and Picnic Rocks.
