MUNISING - Elizabeth Marie (Ebbeson) Johnson of Three Rivers, Michigan, until recently a lifelong resident of Munising, has gone to be with her Lord and Savior on July 16, 2010.
Betty was born in Munising, Michigan, December 6, 1919 of Swedish immigrant parents, Aaron Nathanial Ebbeson and Clara (Dahlgren) Ebbeson. She was ushered into the world by Dr. Scholtes, at her family home on West Varnum Street, as were all but one of her siblings. Betty was a 1937 graduate of Mather High School and, after graduation, worked for the First National Bank as a bookkeeper for 3 ? years. She then was hired by the Munising School System as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools, William McNeil, a position that she held for the next 28 years into the term of Loren Hulsizer. On March 29, 1958, Betty married George E. Johnson of Munising and they made their home for the next 50 years on West Varnum Street, next to the Ebbeson family property.
Betty was a member of the Munising United Methodist Church and a good friend of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and an active member and supporter of the Alger County Historical Society for many years. Betty enjoyed her summers, loved her family and its history, and loved maintaining many beautiful flower gardens on their Varnum Street properties. Betty is the last local member of the Ebbeson family in Munising, being preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Carl, Dalton and Clifford; and sisters, Evelyn and Esther. She is survived by her husband, George, who resides at Bowman House Assisted Living in Three Rivers, MI; niece, Pamela (Terry) O'Rourke of Saline, MI, niece, Debra Montcalm of Berrien Springs, MI; nephew, Dave (Linda) Montcalm of Three Rivers, MI; great-nieces, Lindsey and Nancy O'Rourke, and Ray Dahlgren of Pontiac, MI and Ted Anderson of Chicago, IL.
Per the family's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising at a later date.
