MARQUETTE - A three-vehicle accident on U.S. 41 killed a Gwinn man and caused minor injuries to two other people.
At 10:07 a.m., the Marquette Police Department responded to the intersection of U.S. 41 South and Tonti Road near Shiras Hills. According to police reports, a preliminary investigation found a 2004 Kia driven by Jay Robbins, 64, of Gwinn, was traveling south on U.S. 41 in the northbound lane. Robbins' vehicle struck a white 1991 Ford pickup traveling northbound, with three occupants inside.
A 2005 Buick, which was also traveling northbound, was also involved in the accident.
Robbins was extricated from the vehicle and later died at Marquette General Hospital from his injuries. The driver of the Buick and a passenger in the pickup were treated at MGH for minor injuries.
Robbins' 6-year-old grandson was in the vehicle at the time of the accident; he was examined at MGH and later released.
Traffic on U.S. 41 was diverted to South Lake Street and South Front Street until 5 p.m.
The investigation into the cause of the accident - including why Robbins' vehicle was allegedly traveling in the wrong lane - is ongoing. Marquette police believe other vehicles may have swerved to avoid striking the Kia and are asking those with information on the accident to contact the department at 906-228-0400.
