Outhouse Races go international

February 28, 2010
By ANDY NELSON-ZALESKI Journal Staff Writer

TRENARY - From mysterious sightings of sasquatch and Elvis Presley to two Japanese reality television stars, this year's 17th annual Trenary Outhouse Classic was more than just pushing portable potties down a snow-packed trail.

Thousands of spectators lined the closed section of Trenary's Main Street to watch as 27 two-person teams raced their specially designed outhouses Saturday.

The kid's races had two teams, which included team Chupa Cabra Crap House run by cousins Mackenzie, 12, and Sam Seymour, 11, and team Farm Girls run by Olivia Viau, 5, and Willow Pasanen, 7.

The adult races categories varied from a Las Vegas style outhouse pushed by two Elvis Presley impersonators to Iditarod styled outhouse sleds pulled by a team of sasquatches.

But the craziest thing about the race was the Japanese reality television stars, Keiichi Hara and Yuzuru Abe.

Hara and Abe are the stars of the Japanese-based Super Sanma's Karakuri-TV, a reality television show that airs on Tokyo Broadcasting System.

The two have been traveling around the world entering a variety of tournament and contests in hopes of filming them winning.

After racing their Japanese decorated outhouse, the pair said the race was very fun and that they were glad to have raced.

The classic is more than just a good time, too, as it is a fundraiser for the community of Trenary.

Race coordinator Dianne Peterson said this year the goal is to raise enough money for new playground equipment and park benches.

"All the proceeds go back to the community," Peterson said.

Funds raised also go toward a scholarship given to a Superior Central High School graduate each year.
