ESCANABA - An Escanaba area resident has died from the H1N1 virus, according to public health officials.
Public Health, Delta and Menominee Counties officials said they received confirmation of the first H1N1 influenza-related death in its two-county district Tuesday. The agency covers Delta and Menominee counties.
"The deceased was an adult with underlying medical conditions," agency officials said in a press release. "While most people infected with the H1N1 influenza virus experience mild to moderate illness, sadly, hospitalizations and deaths have occurred in Michigan and nationwide."
Public Health has reported the death to the Michigan Department of Community Health, which is tracking the severity and spread of the H1N1 virus in the state.
The agency did not release any other information on the victim.
"No further information regarding the case will be disclosed to protect the privacy of the family," officials said in the release.
Another H1N1 related death was reported earlier this month in the Dickinson-Iron County area by that region's health department.
