Ellingson, Olver spark Wildcats to victory
By CURT KEMP Journal Sports WriterCOLUMBUS, Ohio - The Northern Michigan University hockey team picked up its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association win of the season pretty quickly after it left Marquette for Columbus, Ohio.
Winning 1-0 on the campus of Ohio State University, the Wildcats (2-4-1, 1-2-0-0 CCHA) scored Friday night's lone goal quickly.
Junior forward Mark Olver scored his fifth goal of the season only 22 seconds into the game. Olver received an assist from Phil Fox.
From that point on, it was the goaltenders who shined.
Wildcat sophomore goaltender Reid Ellingson picked up the shutout with 32 saves.
Ohio State goaltender Dustin Carlson had 34 saves of his own for the 2-6-1, 1-3-1-1 Buckeyes.
Ellingson is now 2-1-0 this season, while the loss drops Carlson to 0-5-0.
NMU's penalty kill - ranked second-to-last in the CCHA going into the game, at 79 percent - also managed to hold strong, stopping five Buckeye power plays.
The two teams will play again today at 7 p.m. in Columbus.
