GWINN - No injuries were reported last night when 13 cars of a 130 car train derailed north of McFarland near the intersection of M-35. The accident occurred at 8:34 p.m. as the Chicago and Northwestern train was headed to Escanaba. The cars were loaded with iron ore from the Empire Mine in Palmer.
L'ANSE - Two fires swept through the Zeba Hall Community Center Sunday night and Monday morning, reducing the building to rubble. The building is considered a total loss.

MARQUETTE - Sr. Major and Mrs. William George Friend, former officers of the local Salvation Army Corps, will arrive Sunday to visit their son and daughter-in-law, Capt. A. and Mrs. Friend now in charge of the local corps.
The senior Friends were in Marquette from 1926 to 1928. Major Friend was commissioned an officer in 1905 in London, England, and Mrs. Friend was commissioned the following year in London. They have served in England, Canada and the United States.
MARQUETTE - Miss Elba Morse, Miss Emma Anderson, Mrs. Josephine Robertson of Marquette and Miss Signe Johnson of Ishpeming will leave Monday to attend the Michigan Public Health conference in Detroit. Dr. C.P. Drury will leave later to attend the meeting.
