MARQUETTE - A 28-year-old Cornell man was arraigned Wednesday on three felony charges related to the assault of a 64-year-old woman in Wells Township Monday evening.
William Joseph Griggs was charged in Marquette County's 96th District Court with first-degree home invasion, second-degree criminal sexual conduct causing injury, and second-degree criminal sexual conduct committed during the commission of another felony, according to a Michigan State Police spokesman at the Negaunee post.
Griggs faces a preliminary examination in the court on Nov. 18, police said. He remained lodged in the Marquette County Jail on Wednesday evening after not posting a $125,000 cash bond.
Griggs was arrested Tuesday following the incident the night before where he reportedly tried to talk his way into the victim's residence in southern Marquette County before forcing his way through the door, according to police. He then grabbed the woman and threw her to the floor, though she defended herself with a hammer and avoided further harm, police reported. No information was available about whether Griggs was injured in the incident.
