NEGAUNEE - For the first time, winter residents and visitors will be able to stop by and peruse the Michigan Iron Industry Museum.
With the completion of the new access road to U.S. 41 in Negaunee Township and a new parking area, the museum will change to yearround operations.
"We think it's going to serve schools and organizations as well as local residents and travelers," Museum Director Tom Friggens said.
Effective this week, the museum will be open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and on the first Saturday of each month.
"The new road with the new parking lot allows us to stay open in the winter simply because parking is easier and more convenient," Friggens said.
Later next year, the museum will transition into full weekend operations year-round with the completion of a new 2-mile network of interpretive trails on the museum property.
"More than anything, it is a prelude of things to come," Friggens said, adding that with the opening of the trail system, outdoor activities and other programs will likely be available through the museum. "We want to reach a larger audience."
