NMU volleyball dominates Finlandia
By BILL HARRIS Journal Sports WriterMARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University volleyball team closed out its 2009 regular home season on a high note as the Wildcats upended the Finlandia University Lions, 3-0 at Vandament Arena in Marquette on Friday.
Northern Michigan (17-8) dominated all three sets, with scores of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-9. The match against the Lions (7-11) was a non-conference meeting for the Upper Peninsula schools.
Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy led the way offensively for the Wildcats with 12 kills, but NMU used the match as a chance to get some younger players in the game for some experience.
Stephanie Bahrman (Gwinn High School) had six kills, Dani Branco had five kills, two aces and a solo block, and Andree Ring had four kills and five service aces for the Wildcats.
Leading the way on defense was senior libero Cassie Osiecki, who had 10 of the team's 28 total digs. Abby Lovell had 33 assists in the win for NMU.
For the Lions, Kara Rastello had seven kills on offense, and led the defense with nine digs. Becky Kangas added five kills and the team's only service ace.
Marquette Senior High School graduate Lauren Jarvinen had two assists and three digs for Finlandia.
