MARQUETTE - Bargaining units for Northern Michigan University professors and NMU's administration have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.

Ron Sundell, president of the NMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said this is just the first step in the process of ratification. He said today he is meeting with the bargaining council, which consists of representatives from all the different academic departments.

Within a few weeks following that meeting, members will conduct a ratification vote, he said. He said he expected the vote to be in early November.

Sundell would not discuss the details of the proposed agreement, preferring to first inform all 297 members of the faculty union. Cindy Paavola, NMU's director of communications and marketing, also declined to discuss details.

The first tentative agreement was rejected 132-107 on Sept. 23.
