Baraga’s Terex Handlers will close operations, 90 jobs to be lost

BARAGA - Terex Handlers, a division of Terex Corporation in Baraga, will cease production in approximately two months.

Melinda Smith, marketing communications manager for Terex, said the company will be closing the doors roughly between Nov. 30 and Dec. 11.

"The employees were notified within 60 days and there will be exit benefits," she said.

Terex, which has 12 manufacturing plants and 24 office locations worldwide, will be closing the Baraga location due to economic uncertainty, Smith said.

"We will be relocating to Moses Lake, Wash.," she said. "We are consolidating our footprint and it has to do with the construction industry."

Approximately 90 positions are being eliminated, she said.

This certainly does not aid in Baraga County's unemployment rate, one of the highest in the country at 24.5 percent. An estimated 1,150 individuals are employed in Baraga County, according to the Bureau Labor Statistics with the United States Department of Labor, and the 90 positions being eliminated make up nearly 8 percent of that total workforce.

Terex, an aerial work platform company, manufactures construction materials such as lifting products and rough terrain telescopic materials.

"Through a comprehensive evaluation of our operations, we have determined that closing our telehandler manufacturing plant in Baraga will optimize the productivity of our operations," according to a press release from Terex. "Consolidating this product line into our established manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, Wash., will allow us to share best practices, facilities and resources."
