ISHPEMING -?The Westwood Alumni Softball tournament kicked off Thursday evening with four games at two fields, beginning at the Sunnyside Field with the Class of 1995 defeating the Class of 2004, 14-2. For the victors, Jared Lawson (3-for-3) and Kevin Hamel (3-for-3 with two homeruns) excelled. Ryan Lofaro (4 -for-4, 1 homer) and Sarah Stream (2-for-3) led 2004.

In the second game, 1994 slipped past 2005, 6-5. For 1994, Tom Heikkila (2-for-2) and Dan Waterman (1-for-1, homer) led the way, while both Mark Korpi and Curtis Voegtline going 1-for -2, with Korpi homering in a losing effort.

Also at Sunnyside, the Class of 1996 easily dispatched the Class of 2009, 21-7. April, Tina and Dan (no last names provided) led 1996, each going 3-for-5, while Tyler Leuallen and Taylor Watters starred for 2009, each going 3-for-3, with Leuallen scoring a home run.

In the nightcap, 2002 held off a rally by 2000, winning 18-17. For 2002, Troy Heikkinen went 3-for-5 with a HR, and Andy Kruger went 4-for-5. The Class of 2000 was led by Jesse Perry's homer and Brenda Currie (4-for-4).

At the Clarksburg Field, the Class of 2006 schooled 2007, 29-6. Stege Hintsala performed well for '06, going 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs. Aaron Adriano scored a homer for 2007.

The Class of 1999 defeated '01, 11-5. Levi Hietikko (1999) and Eric Roberts (2001) each went 2-for-2.

Ryan Farley's strong offensive (4-for-4) and defensive performance, as well as a grand slam homerun by Jacob Greer, led the Class of 2008 over the Class of 1997, 18-11. Jake Foster went 3-for-4 with two homers in a losing cause.

In the Clarksburg finale, 2003 got past 1998,11-10. The Class of 2003 was paced by Josh Makela (3-for-3) and Jeremy Steele (2-for-2, HR), and Cody Solka scored the winning run. For 1998, Kari Marta had three fantastic plays in the outfield and Tony Pope had a 2-run double.

Play continues Friday through Sunday, with the finals being held at 12:30 and 1:45 PM on Sunday.
