IRON MOUNTAIN -A Dickinson County man drowned Saturday evening after a fishing accident on Norway Lake, according to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office.

Robert Edward Barnes Sr., 70, of Felch was located by EMS personnel after a 911 call at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday alerted the sheriff's office to a possible drowning on the lake in Felch Township.

Nordic EMS personnel were the first to arrive on the scene, and used several nearby boats to begin a search of the area in which Barnes had last been seen, police said. Shortly afterward, he was found unresponsive in the lake. EMS personnel brought him to shore and attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful.

Barnes was taken to Dickinson County Health System in Iron Mountain by Nordic Ambulance and pronounced dead.

A witness told police Barnes was fishing in a small aluminum boat when he leaned over the side, causing the boat to overturn.

The witness told police Barnes then attempted to swim to shore but went underwater, police said.

The incident is still under investigation by sheriff's deputies.
