MARQUETTE -U.S. Marshals on Wednesday arrested a fugitive living in Champion wanted on rape charges.

According to a written statement from the U.S. Marshal Service, Duane Allen Wood was arrested on charges of first-degree rape and sodomy of a person younger than 14 years old. He has been a fugitive since a warrant was issued in Phelps County in Missouri in October 2007.

Wood was arrested at a home in Champion after the marshals received leads from a fugitive task force. Marshals said Wood had been using the name Scott Lee Meckley and was in possession of a fraudulent driver's license and birth certificate from South Dakota in that name.

The investigation has determined that Wood has been living in the Marquette County area for more than one year.

Wood was lodged at the Marquette County Jail awaiting extradition to Missouri.

Investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshal Service result in the apprehension of about 34,000 federal fugitives each year.
