1 man dead, 2 troopers injured in crash
By JOHN PEPIN, Journal Staff WriterNEWBERRY - A two-vehicle crash southeast of Newberry Monday night has left a local man - the son of the Luce County undersheriff - dead and two Michigan State Police troopers seriously injured.
Michael Jago II, 23, of Newberry was killed in the accident, which occurred about a mile east of the intersection of M-123 and M-28 in Pentland Township.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie post - who are investigating the crash along with an accident reconstructionist from 8th District Headquarters in Marquette - said preliminary indications are the accident occurred when Jago's pick-up truck proceeded through the intersection of M-28 and Luce County Road 403.
Jago's truck collided with an eastbound Michigan State Police patrol vehicle driven by trooper Christopher Archer. Trooper Donald Carrick was a passenger in the vehicle. Both are from the Newberry post.
Jago was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Police said Carrick and Archer suffered serious injuries and were taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry. There they were stabilized and later transferred to Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
An MGH official said this morning that Carrick was in critical condition and Archer was in serious condition.
Chippewa County Central Dispatch received reports of the crash beginning at 11:05 p.m. Monday.
