HOUGHTON - A 6-year-old Houghton County girl is hospitalized in Marquette today after being shot with a shotgun Tuesday.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office responded to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Calumet Township at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, where the girl had been brought.

The incident was reported at the hospital as an accidental shooting, and police are investigating to make sure that's the case, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the girl, a Franklin Township resident, was shot with a 20-gauge shotgun outside a Franklin Township residence.

She was later transported to Marquette General Hospital, where her condition was unknown this morning.

Police said they were not releasing the girl's name today.
