U.P. man drowns in pond
ISHPEMING - A Sagola man died in an apparent drowning Saturday morning in Ishpeming Township.
According to a press release from the Michigan State Police post in Negaunee, the body of Cody Lee Shirkey, 22, was recovered by divers with the Marquette County Search and Rescue Team at 11:30 a.m. from Pike's Pond near North Lake Location.
Police said Shirkey and Ishpeming resident Dale Alongo, 24, were duck hunting from a small boat on Pike's Pond Saturday morning. While returning to shore, the boat became unstable, took on water and sank, police said.
Alongo was able to swim to shore. Neither man was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, police said.
Marquette County Search and Rescue Team and divers, Marquette County Sheriff's Department and Bell EMS assisted troopers at the scene.
