Cleveland-Cliffs changes its name
$4B buyout is pendingCHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mine operator Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. has changed its name.
The company says its new moniker is Cliffs Natural Resources, the name it intended to adopt after its proposed $4 billion buyout of Abingdon, Va.-based coal mine operator Alpha Natural Resources.
That deal hasn't gone through yet, but Cliffs says in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Thursday that it amended its articles of incorporation to change the name Oct. 3.
The combined company would have 8,900 workers and expected 2009 revenue of $10 billion, a reserve base of about 1 billion tons of iron ore and 1 billion tons of coal.
Cleveland-Cliffs' Michigan operations include the Empire Mine in Palmer and the Tilden Mine in National Mine, both in western Marquette County.
