MSP investigating deputy involved shooting
By Houghton Mining Gazette StaffTAMARACK LOCATION - At the request of Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean, the Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting of a Calumet man.
The investigation to date reveals that Houghton County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Butkovich was responding to a call of a neighborhood disturbance when he was unexpectedly attacked by Dan Bailey, 41, of Tamarack Location.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday on Sixth Street in Tamarack Location near Calumet in Osceola Township.
According to police, Bailey, who was wielding a golf club, chased and repeatedly struck the deputy as he was retreating toward his patrol vehicle. While being assaulted, Butkovich was knocked to the ground, where he then drew his service weapon and shot Bailey several times.
During the struggle, Butkovich was also struck by a bullet in his right ankle. Sgt. Barry Koljonen of the Michigan State Police Calumet post said the deputy was expected to make a full recovery. He said the deputy responded to the incident alone.
The incident was recorded by a Sheriff's Department in-car video camera.
The investigation by detectives from the Michigan State Police Calumet, Wakefield, and Negaunee Posts is going on at this time. Once the investigation is completed, it will be submitted to the Houghton County Prosecutor for review.
