Additions to Alger County Women’s Roll of Honor to be released

September 15, 2008
By JOHN PEPIN, Journal Munising Bureau

MUNISING - The names have been released of three area women set to be honored next week in a public ceremony enrolling them on the Alger County Women's Roll of Honor.

Now in its 14th year, the roll of honor recognizes Alger County women who have led enriched lives, whether through work, hobbies, volunteerism or everyday living.

This year's honorees are Alice Fahrbach and Mary Jayne Hallifax of Munising and Karen Scheaffer of Chatham. Members of the public nominate the enrollees.

Fahrbach has been a nurse and caregiver who has been active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, including working overseas and in disaster-relief efforts.

Hallifax is a retired professional photographer who is well-known throughout the community, having photographed countless local people and events shaping area history.

Scheaffer is a retired register nurse who last worked for the Alger Maximum Correctional Facility. She has been a Girl Scout leader for a decade and has been an active community and church volunteer and caregiver.

The induction program will be held Sept. 25 at the Alger County Heritage Center at 1496 Washington St. in Munising. A social gathering will begin at 6 p.m. with the program starting at 6:30 p.m.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is sponsoring the event.

"I am very pleased that Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the park staff have a long-standing tradition of celebrating this important day in the evolution of Women's Rights, and I look forward to joining in congratulating these special women in our community," said Pictured Rocks Superintendent Jim Northup.

The Women of Honor Observance celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.

The theme of this year's observance is, "Generations of Women Moving History Forward."

Last year's enrollees were Jude (Bernard) Holloway of AuTrain Township, Billie Mazzali of Munising, and Wilma (Wilkerson) Hill of Chatham.
