Teen remains missing
By DAN SCHNEIDER, Daily Mining Gazette, HoughtonTORCH LAKE TOWNSHIP - The search for a personal watercraft operator who went missing Wednesday night entered its third day today as a Michigan State Police dive team arrived to assist.
According to Houghton County Sheriff's Department Captain Marjorie Chandonais, at about 7:30 a.m. the MSP team was headed to the search area, which is focused on a stretch of Portage Lake adjacent to North Grosse Pointe Shores near the transition from Portage Lake to Torch Lake known as the Torch Lake Cuts.
Brian Buschell, 19, of Laurium left on a personal watercraft at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday. He did not return and Bootjack Fire & Rescue initiated a search now led by the Houghton County Sheriff's Office and which has included the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Dollar Bay Fire and First Responders and various volunteers.
Part of the search effort has focused on land near the lake, in case Buschell made it to shore and got lost in the woods. Houses line much of the shore near the search zone, but there are large tracts of woodland in the area. The watercraft was found during the first night's search about a mile from Buschell's departure point. Early reports from Bootjack Fire & Rescue indicated the watercraft was out of gas when it was found. Chandonais said this morning the watercraft had gas in the tank when it was recovered.
and was able to start and run.
