MARQUETTE - Brian Castillo and Alissa Weitz left their jobs and families for 10 weeks for one purpose: to see Lake Superior - all of it.

Castillo, who grew up in Madison, Wis., and Weitz, who grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, are taking 10 weeks to circumnavigate Lake Superior in two 18-foot sea kayaks. They recently stopped in Marquette on their 1,300-mile journey around the big lake.

The duo left Marquette's Lower Harbor Tuesday afternoon on their way to their next stop, AuTrain.

They call their journey "Session on Superior" and hope to spread awareness of current threats to the lake and its watershed through Web updates. They are documenting their trip with photos, video and written journals.

Castillo and Weitz are carrying all their camping gear with them in the kayaks and at different locations around the lake have planned food drops which they will pick up every 10 days or so.

The pair are graduates of Northland College in Ashland, Wis. They started their journey on July 1 and plan to finish the trip by Sept. 3 back in Ashland, give or take a few days depending on the weather.

People interested in monitoring their journey can send an e-mail to session.on.superior@gmail.com to receive periodic updates. Their blog, which contains details of their trip as well as photos, can be found at www.sessiononsuperior. blogspot.com.
