Marquette woman dies in crash

CHASSELL — A Marquette woman was killed in a one-car accident in Houghton County on Memorial Day.


Troopers from the L’Anse post of the Michigan State Police are investigating the accident, which happened about 4:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. 41 near South Entry Road in Chassell Township.


Barbara Anderson, 70, of Marquette, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, John Anderson, 71. Their vehicle was southbound on U.S. 41 when it drifted across the centerline and into a ditch on the northbound side, striking several trees, police said.


Barbara Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene, and John Anderson was transported to Portage Health System in Hancock, where he was treated for minor injuries, police said.


Both were wearing seat belts, and police said they believe Anderson may have fallen asleep behind the wheel prior to the crash, but the accident is still being investigated.


Also assisting at the scene were Mercy Ambulance, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, and the Chassell Township Fire Department and first responders.
