POSTED: May 17, 2008

TRAVERSE CITY — The Marquette Senior High School softball team took home two wins from their doubleheader against Traverse City Central in Traverse City, Friday.

Marquette took the first game,  6-1, with Jenny Hopper getting the win on the mound for the Redettes.

“Hopper’s having a great year,” MSHS coach Rick Schwemin said. “She’s pitching, she’s hitting, and she’s doing everything we ask of her. More importantly, when she gets going, the rest of the girls follow, so she’s a great leader for us.”

Hopper struck out seven batters in seven innings, while she gave up only one run on three hits, and walked one.

Abbie Watters led Marquette’s offense, knocking in two RBIs on a double. Kylie Coombs went 1-for-2 in the first game.

Anne Rockefeller was Traverse City’s pitcher, taking the loss after giving up six runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.

Marquette’s bats came alive in a 9-0 shutout for the second game.

Shaun O’Donnell had three hits for Marquette (18-10-1), and Chessie Murringer went 2-for-5, and knocked in five RBIs.

“In the second game, our bats really came alive,” Schwemin said.

Marquette pitcher Kirsten Phillips had nine strikeouts with no walks in the shutout. Phillips only gave up two hits.

“Phillips pitched a good game,” Schwemin said. “She’s had some problems with her elbow, but looked like herself tonight. That’s good to see going into the districts.”

Rockefeller gave up nine runs on 15 hits in her second loss of the night.

“It was really nice to see our offense come to life in the second game, because we have two big games coming up this week,” Schwemin said.

Marquette faces Escanaba on Thursday, then takes on Alpena, which is the No. 2 Division I ranked team in the state, on Saturday.

“We split with Alpena last weekend,” Schwemin said. “They have a fire in their eyes, and didn’t like getting beat.”

“Escanaba is always a good battle,” Schwemin added. “These will be good games for us, because we’re trying to get ranked, and are getting ready for districts.”
