Louis William ‘Luke’ Artibee

MUNISING — Louis William “Luke” Artibee, age 91, of 425 Fisher St., Marquette, and formerly of Munising, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, where he had been a resident for almost two years.


Luke was born on October 3, 1916, in Munising to the late Abraham and Edith (St. Peter) Artibee. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and then William G. Mather High School. Luke married Bernice Miller and they raised three children. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from April 11, 1944, until January 17, 1946. Luke was a Nose Gunner on a PBM5 Mariner in the Asiatic Pacific Area. Following the war, Luke drove trucks for Alger County and his brother Lloyd before beginning employment with the U.S. Postal Service. Luke was a letter carrier for over thirty-two years before retiring. He also served as Undersheriff with Cluen “Dan” Malone for many years. Luke had married Shirley Bobb and she preceded him in death while they were living in New Mexico. He was a member of the Ikkala Brothers VFW Post and he enjoyed hunting, traveling and fishing in his younger days.


Luke is survived by his son, Dan (Gloria) Artibee of Forest Lake, Mich.; daughter, Regina Zoromski of Elmhurst, Ill.; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Ben) Chartier of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Luke was also preceded in death by his daughter, Molly Hunting; grandson, Brad Hunting; sisters, Marceline Nelson and Marguerite Artibee; brothers, Joe, Lloyd, Ernest and John “Jack” Artibee; and infant twin siblings.
