MARQUETTE — Former state Rep. Steve Adamini will be challenging Marquette County Prosecutor Gary Walker in the August primary.

Adamini and Walker, both of Marquette, will face off in the Democratic primary. The filing deadline for partisan candidates was Tuesday.

Besides the prosecutor’s race, there will be contested races in the primary for Marquette County sheriff and a county board seat.

In the sheriff’s race, incumbent Michael Lovelace of Ishpeming Township is being challenged by Ishpeming City Police Chief Jim Bjorne, also of Ishpeming Township, in the Democratic primary.

John Pizzi of Forsyth Township was the only Republican who filed for the sheriff’s race.

The county board seat being contested is District 2, which encompasses a portion of the city of Marquette. Incumbent Harvey Wallace is opposed by Tony Tollefson in the Democratic primary.

County Clerk Connie Branam, County Treasurer Anne Giroux, Register of Deeds Patricia Manley, Mine Inspector John Carlson, and Drain Commissioner Patrick Michael Farrell all have filed as Democrats, and are unopposed.

In other county board districts, Jim Cihak, Bruce Heikkila, Paul Arsenault, Nick Joseph, Gerry Corkin, Deborah Pellow and Chuck Bergdahl, all Democrats, and Bob Struck, a Republican, are running unopposed in the primary.

Others who have filed for the county board seats are Republican Dan Adamini in District 6, which is Arsenault’s district, and Democrat Gene Suardini in District 8, which is Struck’s district.

While the deadline for partisan candidates to file has passed, candidates who want to run as independents can file petitions until July 17.
