MARQUETTE — In honor of Mother’s Day, Marquette resident Sue Kensington will visit her mother’s grave. River Mota, 8, and her brother Roland, 11, of Marquette will give their mom Sara two stuffed animals and cards. And Doug York and his daughter Isabella, 3,  will surprise her mom and grandmother with flowers.

It’s that time of the year again when mothers all around the world are celebrated.

Businesses in Marquette are hosting Mother’s Day sales and flower shops are as bustling.

“We were worried with the economy and all,” said Sarah Ruuska, owner of Lutey’s Flower Shop in Marquette. “But it’s been good. We’re sending a lot of mixed spring arrangements, a lot of blooming plants, hydrangeas and geranium planters.”

She said that most people called in their orders or used the shop’s Web site to get their gifts ready for Mother’s Day.

“We’ve had people of all ages,” Ruuska said. “Mothers buying for their daughters who are mothers now. We had a person call from South Korea to place an order.”

Another person called from British Columbia to order Mother’s Day flowers.

Ruuska herself has gotten some plants from her children that they grew all by themselves.

“I still like to get flowers even though I am with them all the time,” she said.

Kensington, who operates Hot Plate, a paint-it-yourself pottery studio in Marquette, was offering 50 percent off to mothers who want to paint pottery today.

“It’s usually kids who bring their mom,” she said. “It’s not so much about pottery, but it’s about the kids being with their mom. On Mother’s Day — at least for me — I just want to be with my kids.”

Susan Brian, owner of Farmer Q’s Market, said a lot of fathers with their children have been shopping at her store, mostly for kitchen gadgets.

“There have been some moms shopping for themselves because they claim their sons don’t know what to get them,” she said.

Others have bought vegetables at the store to prepare brunch for their moms, she said.

Many stores are open today for last-minute Mother’s Day gift shopping.
