MARQUETTE — A community fund-raising effort patterned after Oprah Winfrey’s “Big Give” challenge includes a big push Thursday in the form of a basket auction. Proceeds go to the Women’s Center and Harbor House capital campaign.

The auction will be at the Marquette Golf and Country Club on Grove Street in Marquette. A social hour begins at 5 p.m., with bidding at 6 p.m. and a grand prize drawing later in the evening.

Stephanie Jones, a Realtor and associate broker at Select Realty, said more than eight dozen baskets were donated by businesses for the auction. Select Realty’s staff helped to solicit the donations, Jones said.

The grand prize at the auction is an entertainment-themed basket with a LCD television, a DVD player, movies and snacks that was donated by Fox Motors and Swick Heating and Plumbing. Other baskets include sweets from Donckers, knitting supplies, baby toys and restaurant gift certificates.

Jones noted the timing of the auction is good for Mother’s Day or for other spring gift-giving occasions.

The capital campaign aims to raise $1.5 million over the next few years to pay for the purchase and renovation of the new shelter, to expand abuse prevention services and to establish an operating reserve for the organization.
