DAGGETT — A 84-year-old woman died in a house fire Friday evening in Menominee County, according to the Michigan State Police Post in Stephenson.

Doris Leona King was trapped in her house on N9309 County Road 354 in Daggett Township when police arrived at 6:11 p.m. Friday. Two troopers tried to rescue King but were forced from the home by fire and smoke, according to a Michigan State Police press release. King’s son, Dennis King, 59, escaped from the home. Police said Dennis King advised them that his mother had attempted to retrieve her pet cat when she was trapped in the fire.

Both troopers were treated at Bay Area Medical Center for smoke inhalation and released.

An investigator from the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Unit will be examining the residence for the cause of the fire. At this point, police said the fire may have been caused by the chimney. The house is a total loss.

Assisting at the scene were the Daggett Township Fire Department, the Stephenson Fire Department, Mid County Rescue and the Menominee County Sheriff Department.
