MARQUETTE — A Harvey woman died this morning following a two-car accident Monday on U.S. 41 South near the rock cut.

Danielle Thibeault, 24, of Harvey, was taken to Marquette General Hospital Monday night in critical condition, police said, and hospital staff said she died this morning.

The Chocolay Township Police Department said the accident happened at about 6 p.m. Monday just north of Harvey. A northbound Volkswagen Beetle driven by Thibeault lost control for unknown reasons and struck a southbound Pontiac Montana van driven by Howard Ellis, 60, of Marquette, police said. Sharon Ellis, 67, of Marquette, was a passenger in the van.

Both drivers were cut out of the vehicles with extrication equipment, and all three were taken to the hospital by MGH EMS.

The Ellises’ conditions this morning were not available from the hospital, upon their request.

Traffic on U.S. 41 was blocked for about 1¢ hours after the accident. Assisting at the scene were the Marquette City Police Department, the Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and Chocolay Township and Marquette City fire departments.

The accident remains under investigation by the Chocolay Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
