MARQUETTE — Whether it’s a candid snapshot at the lake or a professional shot of downtown Marquette, the 231 House of Muses, in conjunction with the Oasis Art Gallery, will be accepting photographs of Marquette for an art show called “Snapshots: A Collective History of Marquette.”
The gallery began taking entries on Saturday. Any type of photo, any size, framed or unframed and from amateurs or professionals are being accepted.
231 House of Muses promotional director Todd Ward said the music and art organization wanted to do the show to acknowledge a place they love.
“Everyone involved with 231 lives in Marquette and absolutely loves it,” he said. “It’s our home. We know a lot of people hold the area close to their heart.”
Ward said he hopes this will be an opportunity for people to share their experiences living in Marquette. He said they are encouraging Polaroids and snapshots in hopes that the art show will encompass as many different viewpoints as possible.
“They can be of personal or historical significance,” he said.
This is the same reason they are opening the show to everyone who would like to submit photos.
“Not everybody is a professional,” he said. “A total barrage of photos will be quite a thing to see — walking in and seeing a couple hundred photos of Marquette as opposed to 20 or 30.”
Many of the photos will be hung from the ceiling, with larger ones mounted on the wall, Ward said.
The gallery will be accepting art for the show through the month. The art show will conclude with a closing reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 29.
Ward said the art show is part of the House of Muses’ effort to bring the organization back to its original stature before it lost its Washington Street home to a fire on Jan. 6, 2007.
“We want to see it be what it was before,” Ward said. “We want to be involved in the community.”
