MARQUETTE — The first open-heart surgical procedure in the history of Marquette General Hospital North was performed Monday morning. According to a hospital spokesman, the coronary artery bypass operation was performed at about 7:30 a.m. The spokesman said the operation went “very well” and the 36-year-old male patient is “resting comfortably.”


Englebert Humperdinck’s musical version of Grimm’s fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel,” will be presented by Northern Michigan University Wednesday through Sunday at the Roberts Theatre. Curtain time for the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows in 8:15 p.m. The Sunday performance, set for 2 p.m., is a benefit performance for NMU’s Arts Chorale, theater director James Panowski said.


NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Council will begin taking bids for construction of a wastewater treatment plant and a sewer rehabilitation project following action taken Monday. At its meeting Monday, the council accepted an Environmental Protection Agency grant for $3,740,923 to partially fund the project. The total cost will be in the neighborhood of $4,700,000 according to City Manger Ronald Cardone.

MARQUETTE — The first quarterly membership “smoker” and general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held in the dining room of the Hotel Clifton at 7:30 next Saturday night, February 7.


Firemen were summoned at 8:27 this morning when a gas tank on a crane in the J.H. Green junk yard, Grove street, ignited. Damage was light.


NEGAUNEE — Frank B. Rodda has returned from Milwaukee, where he was a patient in a hospital.


Mr. and Mrs. Abel Levine have gone on a purchasing trip to Chicago. From there they will go to Martinville, Ind., to spend three weeks.


A new Superior Cleaners shop in Negaunee will be opened tomorrow at 514 Iron street, by R.A. Tommola, proprietor.
