MARQUETTE — The United States Olympic Education Center women’s freestyle wrestling team put a bench mark in its season Friday at the Vandament Arena, defeating Oklahoma City University in both matches of the USOEC Duals (16-12, 16-13).USOEC coach Shannyn Gillespie said that the women executed what they have been working on perfectly in Friday’s match.
“We had a great performance, I’m very happy with the results,” Gillespie said. “The girls are starting to execute what we’ve been working on, which is progress.”
With a lot of effort and heart put forth in each match, it was a team effort that gave USOEC the win, said Gillespie.
“Overall, the whole team performed well tonight,” Gillespie said. “Even in the matches we lost today, they had a fighting spirit.”
The team effort was apparent as USOEC lost only seven out of 18 matches between both sets.
Alyssa Lampe got things started for USOEC, in the first match of set one as she defeated Nicole Woody (6-0, 5-0) in the 48 kilogram class.
Sadie Kaneda followed it up, defeating Erica Torres by decision in the 51kg class.
OCU took the last two matches as Ashley Sword defeated Lindsey Brooks in the 67kg weight class and Lacey Novinska pinned Katie Crouch for the win in the 72kg class.
USOEC took the set 16-12.
In set two, Lampe didn’t hesitate at all as she quickly took down OCU’s Lene Wood (6-0, 3-1) in the 48kg class, giving her her second win of the night.
In the 51kg weight class, Kaneda picked up her second win as well for USOEC as she defeated Jennifer Peabody (7-0, 4-2).
OCU picked up three wins in the second set. Samantha Phillips (OCU) defeated Amber Miracle by decision in the 59kg class. In the 67kg weight class, Briana Conway (OCU) defeated Lindsey Brooks, while teammate Melissa Simmons pinned Crouch in 1:18 for the win.
USOEC won the set 16-13, winning four out of seven matches.
Gillespie said that there was a good performance from everyone.
“We had a good showing,” Gillespie said.
“Some of the girls were able to win two (matches) today and our new-comers are doing well and gaining experience. We had some girls that are still in high school, matching up against an all collegiate team. That showed tremendous effort.”
Crouch, Schuyler Brown, Beth Johnson and Elizabeth DeAngelo all are seniors at Marquette Senior High School.
Brown and Johnson each had two wins for USOEC in the dual, as well as Lampe and Kaneda.
Gillespie added that, with training camp coming up, he is happy that the girls will have the time to work on their technique.
“The winter training camp in Colorado Spring will be a big help for us,” Gillespie said.
“We’ll have the time to focus on practicing and fine tuning our technique for the upcoming months.”
