NOVI, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area pastor's vision of persuading 10,000 volunteers to pack 2 million meals in three days is officially underway.
In 2011, the Rev. Brad Powell directed 5,000 volunteers as they packed 1 million meals over the same time period.
Now, Powell is looking to double that effort this weekend at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, which is donating 65,000 square feet of space.
The massive undertaking kicked off Friday. Packers worked two-hour shifts, with 900 people on the job during each shift.
The food they're packing is a mixture of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and 21 vitamins and minerals. It's designed to provide a child with a day's worth of nutrition.
The meals will be distributed to the malnourished in El Salvador, Haiti and the Philippines.
