MARQUETTE — It shouldn’t be too surprising — a big mound of snow once put Marquette on the map. This wasn’t a big storm, however, though a few of them probably helped. Instead, it was a huge pile of the white stuff carved into a 220-foot-long, 50-foot-high replica of a U.S. Navy battleship. The year was 1941, nearly a year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II and real battleships were needed. Marquette resident and freelance author Larry Chabot recalled the huge wintertime sculpture when he wrote and researched an article for the January-February issue of Michigan History, the magazine of the Historical Society of Michigan. The story is not only played prominently near the front of the issue, but is the cover story, too. Illustrated with three photographs, the full-color two-page spread is just the latest of Chabot’s works to reach prin.
