Salvation Army asks for community support

MARQUETTE — The empty shelves at the Salvation Army food pantry are an unwelcome sight to Walter Sleeter, director of Salvation Army operations. “At this time of the year we are always a little low at the pantry, but it’s extremely low,” Sleeter said. “We’re getting approximately 10 new families per week that have not been here before. That’s for financial help, food or shelter.” Not only is the Salvation Army’s food pantry nearly empty, monetary donations have slowed down as well. “The fact that monetary donations are down about $27,000 (from last year) has become a severe strain on our ability to help people,” he said. “We haven’t turned anybody away, but we can’t help as much as we normally do.” Sleeter said because of low donations and greater demand, the Salvation Army’s cash flow situation has been difficult.
