NMU hockey: Chernwichan, Gron sign ATOs
March 21, 2012 - Matt Wellens
Northern Michigan University seniors Tyler Gron and Andrew Cherniwchan both signed amateur tryout deals Wednesday and were en route to join their professional clubs.
Gron, an All-CCHA first-team forward for NMU this season, signed an ATO with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. The Sound Tigers sit second in the Northeast Division and sit sixth in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Sound Tigers are an affiliate of the NHL’s New York Islanders.
Gron led NMU in scoring this season with 37 points on 17 goals and 20 assists. He went undrafted and was considered a free agent upon the completion of NMU’s season.
Cherniwchan, who was also an undrafted free agent, signed with the South Carolina Sting Rays, which are the ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitols. Cherniwchan spent some time this offseason at a Capitols’ development camp and had spoke with Capitols scouts throughout the year, specifically at Michigan Tech approximately 24 hours after learning his father had lost a longtime battle with cancer.
Cherniwchan recorded 10 goals and 10 assists with the Wildcats in 28 games this season.
