Northern Michigan’s Thurber ruled out for CCHA playoff series at Michigan
March 5, 2013 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University hockey team will be without its leading point scorer against Michigan this weekend at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor for a best-of-three CCHA first-round playoff series.
Wildcats senior forward Matt Thurber left practice on Tuesday at Lakeview Arena with a broken right ankle and has been ruled out for the Friday through Sunday series against the Wolverines. Puck drop is 7:35 p.m. each night.
His collegiate career is over.
Thurber, who missed five games this season due to suspension, leads the Wildcats with 32 points on six goals and 26 assists in 30 games.
The 32 points ranks sixth in the CCHA while his 26 assists is tops in the league’s final season. Nationally, Thurber is 18th in points and fifth in assists.
The Wildcats are practicing this week during NMU’s spring break at Lakeview Arena, which like Yost, has an NHL-size ice sheet. The Berry Events Center is an Olympic-size rink, measuring 15-feet wider.
