3/2/13 NMU hockey line charts/playoff scenarios: Wildcats go for sweep of Lakers on Senior Night

March 2, 2013 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University hockey team goes for a sweep of Lake Superior State at 7:35 p.m. tonight on Senior Night at the Berry Events Center in hopes of securing a home CCHA first-round playoff series next weekend in Marquette.

The Wildcats defeated the Lakers on Friday, 3-1, via a goal and two assists by sophomore Reed Seckel and 50 saves by junior goaltender Jared Coreau.

Northern has a number of scenarios that keep them home next weekend, but they all center around a win tonight at the Berry Events Center. Here’s the possibilities:

Northern Michigan clinches a home CCHA first-round playoff series if:

— NMU defeats LSSU in regulation or overtime; AND Michigan loses at home to Ferris State in regulation, overtime or a shootout; OR Bowling Green State loses at Notre Dame in regulation, overtime or a shootout.

Northern currently wins the best regular season winning percentage tiebreaker over Michigan and would win the best regular season winning percentage tiebreaker over Michigan and BGSU should there be a three-way tie for between the Falcons, Wildcats and Wolverines (NMU win, Michigan and BGSU lose shootouts).

Where the Wildcats lose out is the conference wins tiebreaker should all three teams tie with 34 points, hence why NMU can’t get home ice with just a shootout victory.

Full CCHA tiebreaking procedures can be found here.

Below are the lineups tonight for NMU and LSSU. Only change for the C’Cats is junior forward Jake Johnson is in for freshman forward Justin Rose.
