NMU Sports Three Stars (Feb. 18-24)
February 25, 2013 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — Three Northern Michigan University student-athletes came up big when their teams needed them to over the weekend, with two rebounding from less-than stellar performances to earn their team a win.
The NMU Sports Three Stars works just like three stars in hockey with the third star being the third best performance and first star being the top performer of the week. All NMU varsity NCAA teams are eligible — from hockey to skiing to golf — and a week will be considered Monday through Sunday. Honorable mentions are given out on rare occasions.
Here are the latest honorees. Congrats to the victors on such a prestigious award, which is chosen by such a prestigious panel — me.
Erik Higby, men’s hockey — The junior forward scored both nights in a split at Bowling Green State and finished with three points total. Higby assisted on the second goal of the first period Friday, then inserted the dagger in the third period of a 5-3 win for NMU. On Saturday, Higby gave NMU a goal and 1-0 lead 3:55 into the game. He finished plus-1 on the weekend.
Alyssa Colla, women’s basketball — The sophomore guard rebounded from a poor, nine-point night on Thursday, a win over LSSU, to post a game-high 21 points in a must-win game against Northwood at home. She finished 6-of-15 from the field, 9-of-10 from the free throw line, one point shy of her season-high and a trey away from matching her career-high in points.
George Cartwright, men’s Nordic skiing — The junior from Lander, Wyoming was the lone Wildcats to win an NCAA Central Regional individual title over the weekend. Cartwright won the men’s 20-kilometer freestyle in Houghton on Sunday after finishing eighth in the 10K classic on Saturday. The Wildcat men captured the NCAA Central Regional men’s title.
