NMU Hockey Series Snapshot: Say Cheese! Wildcats host Badgers in Titletown

October 12, 2012 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — Welcome to the weekly NMU Hockey Series Snapshot, where I share a bunch of links that may or may not actually pertain to the Northern Michigan University hockey team and the opponent it is playing that week.

I’ll also post a stupid picture in order to justify the unoriginal name for this series of blog posts.

To your right is this week’s picture that has nothing to do with Northern Michigan or Wisconsin hockey. It’s a cheesehead. Get it? People in the building down the street from the Resch Center, Lambeau Field, wear them. It’s really annoying to sit behind these people. I once owned a cheesehead, but it was in the shape of a cowboy hat. My 10-year-old self thought it was awesome.

Cheeseheads may be acceptable at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, but they are not acceptable at a hockey game. Considering the stadium will be full of Yoopers and Wisconsinites this weekend, I expect to see at least five and at least one will be painted red. My condolences to those who must sit behind these people.

Now onto the links.

Northern Michigan hosts — yes, the Wildcats are the home team — the Wisconsin Badgers at the Resch Center tonight and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. It’s the opening series of the regular season for both teams. Tickets can be found here.

For a one-stop shop that features all of The Mining Journal’s NMU hockey season preview articles and features, check out the Inside 1401 Sports Blog Complete 2012-13 NMU Hockey Season Preview.

In that post, I also linked to a preview for the NMU-Wisconsin series, featuring former Green Bay Gambler Reed Seckel, as well as former Wisconsin Badger Matt Thurber. Seckel was a member of the Gamblers’ 2010 Clark Cup championship team. He knows a thing or two about the Resch.

Down in Madison, the Badgers have been experiencing what head coach Mike Eaves called, “a persistent headache,” or should I say freshman Nic Kerdiles has one according to Andy Baggot of the Wisconsin State Journal and The Anaheim Ducks’ second-round draft pick has been suspended by the NCAA for a season for an improper relationship with an agent.

Bucky’s 5th Quarter has a good thread of info on this developing story. The Badgers are appealing the suspension and if they can’t get it overturned soon, chances are Kerdiles will head north of the border to major junior.

Zack Friedli of College Hockey News previews the Badgers’ season. As Walt Kyle detailed to me earlier in the week, Eaves has dedicated a substantial amount of ice time to younger players and that investment should start to pay off this season.

I did a Q&A with, where I said nice things about the Puckheads. Hopefully they live up to those words.

The official University of Wisconsin preview of the series can be found here.

Wisconsin game notes can be downloaded here.

Northern Michigan game notes can be downloaded here.

NMU will be sponsoring a post game reception on Friday and a pregame tailgate party on Saturday, but if you’re looking for a little local flavor, here’s what I recommend, having grown up in the area.

For a beer, visit the Titletown Brewing Co. downtown on Dousman Street.

Stadium View is the best bar near the Resch Center. You can get a Spotted Cow on tap there and Spotted Cow is awesome, especially on tap.

For a burger, swing by Al’s Hamburger downtown on S. Washington St. Yes, there is a Five Guys Burger and Fries — I have a gift card to burn there yet — on Oneida Street in Green Bay, but Al’s is better.

A little closer to the Resch Center is Kroll’s West, which has some good greasy cheese curds. Like Spotted Cow, greasy fried cheese curds are awesome.

I’ll be in Green Bay all weekend for the series. I’ll be posting news and live game updates throughout the weekend on Twitter. Give me a follow.

This is a cheesehead. On behalf of all Wisconsin natives, I'm sorry if you have to sit behind someone wearing this at the Resch Center this weekend.
