NMU football game day guide: Miner’s Cup edition

October 6, 2012 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — Welcome to the Miner’s Cup edition of the Northern Michigan University football game day guide. Today, the Wildcats host their Upper Peninsula rivals from Houghton, the Michigan Tech Huskies.

So get your best “Tech women are Husky” jokes ready and read along. Here’s everything you need to know about today’s 1 p.m. battle for an old miner’s hat — there’s no actual cup, just a helmet on some wood, but trust us, it’s cool — inside the Superior Dome.

In The Mining Journal on Friday, I got all number crazy and broke down the wide statistical gap between NMU and Tech. For instance, NMU is last in rushing offense and Tech is first in rushing defense.

In the Daily Mining Gazette on Friday, my colleague Stephen Anderson wrote that Michigan Tech head coach Tom Kearly considers his Husky program to be “very fortunate” after seeing the Wildcats’ struggles with redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Morley. Tech finished with a winning record starting a freshman QB last season in now sophomore Tyler Scarlett.

Earlier in the week, Anderson broke down the craziness that was the Huskies’ loss to No. 3 Grand Valley State last weekend. Tech trailed 51-14 at one point only to lose 51-43.

Tech’s Akeem Cason was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kick off 98 yards for a touchdown against GVSU.

Tech set an attendance record for any home sporting event that Saturday at Sherman Field. While I’m sure it was a great atmosphere, I think we’ll all be happy to be inside the Superior Dome based on the forecast for today’s game.

For those of you crazy enough to tailgate in that weather, or for those who failed to click on the link to the forecast, here are NMU’s tailgating policies.

Reading is hard, so I’ve also provided some audio for you. Our good friend Casey Ford of ESPN 970 AM had both coaches on The Sports Pen earlier this week.

You can hear his interview with NMU head coach Chris Ostrowsky here.

His interview with MTU head coach Tom Kearly can be heard here.

If you can’t be at today’s game, you can watch it here for $7, or listen to the game for free online on 100.3 FM The Point.
