8/19/12 NMU football training camp report
August 19, 2012 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — For the first time since the team’s first practice on Thursday, Aug. 9, the Northern Michigan University football team got a day off.
The Wildcats had to endure picture day and local reporters as part of “Media Day” on Sunday, but the group was in good spirits.
As with any media day, not a whole lot of what I’d call “news” came out of it, unless of course today was your first day anywhere near the Superior Dome since the spring. But here’s some tidbits.
— Head coach Chris Ostrowsky made it official to the public on Sunday that redshirt freshman Ryan Morley is the starting quarterback. It’s not a huge surprise considering Morley has been almost exclusively working with the No. 1 offensive unit while senior Cody Scepaniak has been working with the second unit.
I’ll have more on the Ostrowsky’s decision to go with Morley tomorrow morning in The Mining Journal and online at MiningJournal.net.
— After sitting out of Thursday’s scrimmage, senior linebacker Eddie Knoblock returned to practice on Friday and Saturday before taking Sunday off with his teammates. Ostrowsky said there was a chance he would hold Knoblock back throughout camp, but it looks like Knoblock was able to break through to the coaches and trainers to let him back on the field.
Programming note: The Mining Journal’s 2012 NMU football position-by-position previews will begin publishing on Tuesday with the defensive backs. Below is the breakdown of when each will run leading up to the 2012 regular season opener on Aug. 30 at Findlay.
