Northern picked to finish seventh in loaded GLIAC North Division

August 15, 2012 - Matt Wellens

MARQUETTE — The head football coaches of the GLIAC North Division aren’t anticipating much of a shuffling of the 2011 standings based on the 2012 preseason poll that was released Wednesday.

Four teams split the vote with Grand Valley State garnering six of the 16 league votes and 108 points to finish atop the North while Wayne State edged out Hillsdale for second, 99-96, with each getting four first-place votes. Saginaw Valley State was picked fourth with two votes and 87 points.

Michigan Tech was picked to finish fifth with 66 points and Northern Michigan was slotted a pot lower than where it finished the season last year — seventh compared to sixth — with 36 points.

The addition of Walsh, Malone and Notre Dame College, along with the departure of Indianapolis, resulted in a shuffling of the GLIAC football divisions this year.

The GLIAC North lost Indy and gained the top two teams from the 2011 South Division in Wayne State and Hillsdale. The Chargers won the South Division and league title in 2011 with the Warriors finishing a game back in second.

Below are the 2011 final GLIAC football standings, followed by the 2012 preseason poll. Notice the disparity between the two divisions.
