8/14 NMU football training camp report
August 14, 2012 - Matt Wellens
The sixth day of training camp for the Northern Michigan University football team wrapped up around 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening with a lengthy practice of almost two hours inside the Superior Dome.
Here are the highlights:
— Redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Morley continues to work with the No. 1 offense while senior Cody Scepaniak works as the backup QB with the No. 2 unit. Ostrowsky said prior to the team’s first practice last week that he wouldn’t drag out the starting QB debate long, so I expect him to make a decision no later than Media Day on Sunday, if not before or after the team’s scrimmage on Thursday evening.
— True freshman kicker Jason Seeke out of Cedarburg, Wis., and senior place kicker Rockne Belmonte traded off punting duties during drills on Tuesday with Belmonte working with the No. 1 punting unit and Seeke working with the twos.
Ostrowsky was clocking the time it took for each punter to get the ball off with each punt — under two seconds most times. I was keeping track of the hang time of each kick. Belmonte had the better hang times with a max of 3.9 seconds on two occasions compared to the 3.6 high hit twice by Seeke.
Belmonte appeared to have more distance than Seeke, however, the freshman was more consistent. Belmonte had two kicks he’d like back — one short and another that sailed out of bounds.
— Injury report: Junior running back Casey Cotta, who missed all of last season, remains sidelined and it doesn’t look like he’ll be back anytime soon. Senior running back John Privitelli was also missing from practice today.
Senior linebacker Eddie Knoblock did not practice either, but he should be ready to go by Thursday’s scrimmage, if not Wednesday. The team does not want to rush their defensive leader back and risk another injury.
Next practice is at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday with a scrimmage scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
