NMU AD search update: Wong ready to make job offer to recommendation
May 4, 2012 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University does not expect to formally announce who its next athletic director will be until after this weekend’s commencement activities.
An official announcement could come as early as Monday.
NMU President Les Wong presented his recommendation for the athletic director’s position to the university’s board of trustees in a closed session on Friday morning.
The board was expected to approve Wong’s recommendation Friday afternoon during another closed personnel session that did not include the NMU President.
Wong said upon board approval, he would extend an offer to one of the three finalists and hoped to make contact with the approved hire by Saturday morning.
University of Alaska Fairbanks Director of Athletics Forrest Karr, University of North Dakota Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs Sean Johnson and David Diles, the director of athletics and chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland were brought to campus as finalists for the athletic director position in April.
Northern began its search for a new athletic director on Jan. 19 when Ken Godfrey stepped down from the post after serving in the capacity since 2003. He went on medical leave on Oct. 18, 2010 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
NMU's Associate Athletic Director of Operations, Steve Reed, has served as the interim athletic director since Godfrey went on medical leave.
