Patterns, shapes a valuable lesson

To the Journal editor:

Children’s learning about patterns and shapes will not only encourage them in mathematics, valuable though this may be.

These early lessons on geometry (while not on the level of Leonardo da Vinci’s advice about the stains on walls, or the paranoia-criticism of the Marquis… of Pubol) will help their future art enormously.

Not the leaping stags and egg-scrambling teddy bears, the wrestling and absent-minded angels and headless dreamers that drift over their heads in summer clouds, the more prosaic lines and dots and squares will nevertheless assist them years before they make abstract work like Mondrian.

It will even help them if they become photorealist painters akin to Chuck Close.
