Lame duck session

increasingly lame

To the Journal editor:

Michigan’s Republican Legislature is planning to push as much of their agenda to Gov. Snyder’s desk as possible during the lame duck session.

Earlier this year, they passed laws to raise the minimum wage from $9.25 to $12 per hour ( SB 1171) and to require employers to allow workers to earn sick time (SB 1175). The Republicans only passed these laws to prevent them from appearing as proposals on the ballot. Now that the election’s over, they are already moving to gut the legislation.

Additionally, the Republicans plan to fast track construction of a tunnel under the Straits for Enbridge, and possibly more importantly, they are also planning legislation to circumvent Proposals 2 and 3, both of which were approved by voters with huge margins.

The Republicans don’t want voting lines redrawn or easy access for voters and will do everything they can to prevent both of these from happening.

Please contact state Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, and state Rep. Sara Cambensy, D-Marquette, to tell them to work for us during the lame duck session, and contact Gov. Rick Snyder to encourage him to veto any such lame duck legislation.
