UPAWS gives thanks
To the Journal editor:
The ninth annual Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter rummage sale was a great success due to the generosity and support of our community. The fundraiser for the shelter animals was held in June and July, and assisted by many helping hands.
A big thank you to Marquette business owners, Bruce and Christine Pesola, who allowed UPAWS to occupy the vacant Century 21 offices rent-free for the two-month duration of the sale. Also, to Chris Pesola of Wausau Homes, who worked with volunteers to provide access and keys.
Because of their generosity all proceeds from the fundraiser, over $5,300, went directly to the shelter’s day-to-day operations expenses.
A huge outpouring of donated items from the community resulted in 19 rooms full of merchandise, with as many categories, from gardening, hardware and sports, to books, pets, kitchen and more. The high quality of goods was much appreciated, with many gently used, new and collectibles donations. Thank you all who thought of UPAWS as your donation destination.
Thank you to those who shopped at the rummage sale to support the animals, find a good deal, leave a monetary donation, reconnect with other animal lovers and share pictures and stories, or a combination of reasons.
Volunteers who worked behind the scenes were: Linda, Phil, Bob and Jim. They transported heavy tables, large items and loads of donations. Karen designed and printed flyers, and, with Joe, distributed them. Others collected items at the door, sorted them and organized them into rooms.
On sale days, they packaged purchases, loaded vehicles, collected money and answered questions. Included were Marlene, who helped advertise and had donations appraised, Colleen B., Sue, Crystal, who brought baked goods, Abby, Susan, Ashley, Evelyn, Amy, Jody, Cydnee, Eeva, Bruce, Dee, Jodi, Colleen W., Jeff, and Shirley. Reva stopped in daily to collect proceeds.
Thank you all for your commitment to the animals and to the community for your part in the success of the 2018 rummage sale.
